Army Pistol Shooters Win Big at Nationals

Wednesday, July 28, 2010

FORT BENNING, Ga. – Soldiers with the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit swept the team awards and fared exceptionally well individually at the 2010 National Pistol Championships and Trophy Matches at Camp Perry, Ohio. U.S. Army Blue won both the National Pistol Team championship as well as the National Trophy Team Pistol championship, defeating the top civilian and military teams in the country. Team members were Sgt. 1st Class James Henderson, Sgt. 1st Class Gregory Wilson, Staff Sgt. Robert Park, Staff Sgt. Lyman Grover, Staff Sgt. John Ennis, and Staff Sgt. Patrick Franks.

Individually, Park led the USAMU with one of his best performances ever at the nationals. He claimed first place in the Civilian Marksmanship Program Warm-up match to starts things off and continued the hot shooting as the week progressed. He won the Distinguished Revolver match and placed third overall in the National Pistol Championships, his first time earning a place on the winner’s podium.

At the National Trophy Pistol matches Park cleaned up, winning the overall individual pistol championship and the prestigious Presidents Pistol match for the second time of his career. This all came just weeks after winning the Interservice Pistol championship at Fort Benning for the first time.

Park’s USAMU teammate Henderson also had a tremendous week at Camp Perry. Henderson, the defending National Pistol champion, stated things off by winning the NRA Preliminary Pistol match and then went on to win the National Trophy Individual Pistol match and the General Patton Trophy for having the highest aggregate score of the NTI and National Trophy Team Pistol matches.

Staff Sgt. John Ennis won the National Centerfire championship with a score of 885-44x. He was in the running all week to make the podium at the National Championships and finished in fourth place overall. Sgt. Lawrence Cleveland, competing in his first national match, won the Gen. Mellon and Military Police Corps trophies after shooting a 291-10x in the National Trophy Team Match.

Safety On, But Gun Still Killed A Kid

This is kind of crazy and sad. No charges will be filed because the gun can be fired with the safety ON!

Boy, gun owner won’t be prosecuted in Newburg fatal shooting of 12-year-old

The Commonwealth Attorney’s Office will not prosecute the half-brother of 12-year-old Darius Tucker or the owner of the gun that killed the boy as he played in their Newburg home.

Louisville Metro Police said the gun’s safety was on when Darius’ 14-year-old half-brother fired it at him March 29.

“It was them basically playing with the weapons,” Lt. Barry Wilkerson said Wednesday at a press conference announcing the decision of the Commonweath Attorney’s Office, which sent a letter to the police department.

There also was no apparent altercation between the brothers and the shooting appeared accidental, Wilkerson said.

Darius was shot with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun, one of several weapons owned by John O’Bryan that the boys had discovered atop an entertainment center inside their home in the 4000 block of Shady Villa Drive.

O’Bryan has said he believed the handguns were concealed well enough, and Wilkerson said previously that a tall individual may have had a hard time seeing the guns.
The two boys lived in O’Bryan’s home along with their mother, Sandy Tucker, and O’Bryan’s teenage daughter.

O’Bryan declined to comment Wednesday when reached by phone. Sandy Tucker could not be reached by phone for comment.

Wilkerson, head of the Louisville Metro Police homicide unit, said testing at state police labs showed the 9mm handgun would fire with the safety on, which witnesses told police after the shooting.

.Authorities have said the March 29 incident wasn’t the first time the boys had played with the guns. But O’Bryan told police he did not know that the boys knew where the guns were kept and that he never locked them.

The letter from the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office indicated that all of the witness statements, medical examiner’s reports and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives “trace” summaries were considered in the decision not to prosecute.
Wilkerson said a copy of the letter would not be available until next week — after his office has a chance to fully review its contents.

He touched on the importance of gun safety in light of the shooting.
“Keep your weapons safe, keep them out of reach of children,” he said. “Even if you have a lawful reason to have your weapon, make sure you follow all the safety rules.”

A close encounter with history

While on vacation last year we stopped off in Macon GA to see family and I went over to one of my favorite spots Rose Hill Cemetary, a beautiful and very old terraced cemetary that over looks the Ocmulgee River and the final resting place of Allman Bros. Duanne and Berry Oakley. At the very end of the cemetary as it slopes towards the river there is a Confederate cemetary where 600 defenders of Southern freedom rest in peace.

While walking around I noticed one of our Kentucky brothers was before me:

I snapped a pic and thought nothing more of it.
I got home and was looking through the pics and decided to do a little research into the 5th Ky Infantry. Here I was 500 miles from home standing before a grave of someone who fought not 5 miles from my home. Anyone familar with eastern Kentucky might know about the 5th. Here is some interesting info:
